The role of Malay scholars in spreading Islam in the Nusantara archipelago (from the sixteenth to the twentieth century)

Introduction

The spread of Islam in the Nusantara archipelago cannot be separated from the important role played by Malay scholars as key actors in spreading the teachings of Islam. Islam began spreading from the coasts of Sumatra, then expanded to other regions such as Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Maluku. Islam has become the dominant religion in the region. During the period from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, Malay scholars played a prominent role in teaching Islamic values through education, dawah, and cultural diplomacy. This article aims to highlight the role of Malay scholars in spreading Islam during this period, focusing on their contributions to education, writing literature, and their influence on politics and society.

Islamization of Nusantara: context and dynamics

Nosantara was peacefully Islamized through commercial interaction, marriage, and proselytizing. In the sixteenth century, Islamic power centers such as the Sultanate of Aceh, Damac, and Malacca began to emerge. Malay scholars have played an important role in spreading Islamic values in the context of a trusting society.
